Programme description:
The European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH) is a collective that provides services for Diamond Open Access Publishers, Service Providers, and Tools & Technology Providers .It was established in 2025to support institutional, national, and interdisciplinary sustainable, community-led scholarly publishing, as well as Diamond OA publishers and service providers. The EDCH provides training modules, technical services and tools,and coordination of National Capacities Centres at the European level. The aim of the EDCH is to regionally facilitate a globally distributed, aligned, high-quality, and sustainable scholarly communication infrastructure that is managed and owned by the scholarly community.
The EDCH has the following tasks:
- Coordinate and streamline services and practices across National Capacity Centres (NCCs). Create efficiencies, complementarity, and subsidiarity between existing European NCCs, and stimulate the creation of new national NCCs across Europe.
- Implement and monitor the Diamond Open Access Standard (DOAS)
- Manage a central portal for shared resources built during past and current projects
- Pool and redistribute financial and service resources for Diamond Open Access in Europe.
- Facilitate the training and upskilling of publishing specialists across Europe with a view to the continued professionalisation of Diamond OA publishing.
- Expand the EDCH Services to books alongside journals via the AEGIS-OA project.
- Represent the European Diamond OA community at international and regional events and initiatives, including the Diamond OA Summits and UNESCO.
Expected outcomes:
- A thriving European National Capacity Centres (NCCs) Network whose members support Diamond OA at the national level, exchange best practices, and implement European-level quality assurance in line with the Diamond OA Standard.
- A fully established EDCH that develops and coordinates a shared portfolio of Diamond OA services (including the EDCH Registry and Forum, the Diamond Discovery Hub (DDH), the Self-Assessment and the Diamond Open Access Standard (DOAS), the Resources & Guidelines, the Training Platform and the Publishing Tools).
- Well coordinated collaboration between Diamond OA publishers, service providers, researcher organisations and funders across Europe via the EDCH.
- Increased sustainability, professionalisation, and visibility of community-led scholarly publishing through shared infrastructure, guidance, and coordination.
